The Market Town of Helmsley is situated on the A170, between Thirsk and Scarborough and offers a welcome stop for refreshments and a well earned rest. In the centre of the of the town square is a statue of Lord Feversham, not the current lord, but one of his ancestors. It stands in one of the most attractive Market Towns in the country. It has a stream which runs behind the back of the square, pubs, restaurants and shops into the river Rye. Take time to browse the many shops in Helmsley, you may just find something you like. Its well worth a look. The Castle is well worth a visit and can be found just west of the square. Built around 1200AD once known as Furstan Castle. Sir Charles Duncombe bought the Castle after it was rendered useless by Oliver Cromwell. The current Earls of Feversham are descendents of Sir Charles. Lord and Lady Feversham live in the Vanbrugh built mansion on the Duncombe Park Estate, just on the edge of the town. There is a fine church just off the square called All Saints, and houses a letter written by David Livingston while he was in Africa.
